SCASD Teachers Honored by State College Magazine

State College Magazine ran its Teachers of the Year story on May 1, recognizing the outstanding efforts of teachers in the region. Among the honorees were three SCASD teachers: Mary Hershey, chemistry teacher at State High; Mary Robert, second grade teacher at Radio Park Elementary; and Lisa Harrington, kindergarten teacher at Ferguson Township Elementary.

Park Forest Elementary Chosen as Green Ribbon School

In April, Park Forest Elementary School was one of 47 schools nationwide to be named a Green Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The criteria for selection are adherence to these pillars: reduced environmental impact and cost, improved health and wellness, and effective environmental sustainability education. PFE’s nomination stated that it “provides the building blocks for teaching and learning the basic tenets that support life and ensure a sustainable environment for generations to come.” Read more about the award and PFE’s nomination here

The Arts Thrive at SCASD Schools

All May, talented State High seniors had their work on display at the Bellefonte Art Museum as part of the Class of 2016 Art Show. Artists from five local high schools were chosen to participate in the exhibit. 

The SCASD chapter of the National Art Honor Society presented The Heart of State College, a silent art auction and showcase, on May 6 at the Makery on Calder Way.

The State College Jazz Festival celebrated its fortieth anniversary on May 13 with an appearance from the renowned Woody Herman Orchestra. The award-winning State High jazz band was joined by the SCASD middle schools along with other high school jazz bands in the region for a day of adjudication performances and legendary jazz music.
