Transitioning from one grade to the next can be quite stressful for all parties involved, whether it’s a fifth grader moving to middle school, or an eighth grader entering high school. Regardless of the specific grade mark that may initiate the shift, there will be major changes in curriculum, student populace, learning environment and overall atmosphere.

For Julia Wolcott, her activities at SCASD were an opportunity to open up. “I was definitely a late bloomer,” she says. “I was very shy growing up and going into high school. But in seventh grade I had an English class with Mr. Cunningham, and it just ignited a strong interest in me for dissecting stories.” In high school, she threw herself into classes and extracurriculars like Glee Club, Thespians, German, theater and even shot put. “I think those kind of prepared me for what a balancing act being an opera singer is,” she says.

For 15 academic years, from Classroom 304 of the HUB at Pennsylvania State University, LifeLink PSU has provided special education to students between the ages of 18 and 21. It all began when high school teachers became aware of a need in older special education students.
