Enriching Students, Enhancing Lives

State High’s Best Buddies Program Challenges Students

Dedication, friendships, and selflessness. These are just some of the many qualities many people have gained while working in the Best Buddies program. Founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Best Buddies is a national, non-profit organization that aims to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one on one friendships and integrated employment.

The program doesn’t just serve to benefit the students’ “buddies.” It greatly influences the participating students, too.

“I have learned so much from this club like being kind to everyone and to not judge a person before you really know them,” said State High Best Buddies President, senior Jessica Orndorff. “When I am with the kids and teachers in this club, I see how caring and positive they are all the time. Their attitude and outlook on the world make me want to be more like them!”

We recently had the privilege to speak to Jessica about her time in the Best Buddies program and how impactful it has been on her life.

Q: Why did you decide to get involved with the club?
A: I heard of the club through some friends and thought it sounded fun! I also really like working with kids with special needs so I knew this club would be great for me.

Q: How has your involvement with the club made a positive impact on you?
A: I have had so much fun with everyone involved in best buddies. The kids and adults are some of the most fun, kind, thoughtful people who challenge me to be a better person.

Q: Share a positive/heartwarming story you recall from a time spent with your buddy.
A: I remember the first couple times I hung out with my buddy he was shy and didn't like to talk. Now after 2 years of being his buddy, we have made a great relationship that I know will last a lifetime. We now talk and laugh constantly every time we hangout!

Q: How do you think your relationship has made a positive impact on your buddy?
A: My buddy's parents thank me every time I drop him off and say how excited he is every time we hang out. By going out in public often and being around people, I see how mature my buddy has become and I would like to think hanging out with him and taking him places contributed to that.

Q: What skills/values are you solidifying through this club that will carry with you in the future?
A: I have learned so much from this club like being kind to everyone and to not judge a person before you really know them. When I am with the kids and teachers in this club, I see how caring and positive they are all the time. Their attitude and outlook on the world make me want to be more like them!

Clearly there is something special here and Jessica has learned this as she tries to expand the reach of this dedicated and selfless organization.
